PA LAB² [web] — The idea of the Performing Arts Laboratory involves experimental research and development of theatrical art, performance and other related performing practices

The PA LAB website was designed as a digital extension of the Performance Art Laboratory’s identity—rooted in experimental theater and site-specific performance. The design pays homage to the aesthetics of old theatrical posters while introducing a contemporary interaction language that speaks in gestures, glances, and subtle provocations.

We use the dithering effect as both an aesthetic and technical strategy. Inspired by the philosophy of Low-Tech Magazine and the article The Art of Dithering and Retro Shading on the Web by Maxime Heckel, we apply real-time dithering to reduce visual data while preserving detail. This not only gives the site a distinctive, retro-modern look — it also makes image rendering lighter, faster, and more energy-efficient, aligning with a more sustainable and accessible web.
